"First master the form, then break the form, then transcend the form." Why every kettle takes 68 steps and two months

In the cold winters of northern Japan, samurai lords discovered that iron kettles brewed water unlike anything else — sweeter, softer, alive with mineral richness.

That discovery gave birth to Nambu Tekki — the art of casting iron into vessels that transform daily ritual into something sacred. For four centuries, this craft survived because it answered one question that never changes:

"Why should a kettle cost $389?"

NAMBUTEKKI was founded in 1935 by Oikawa Genzaburo, a master craftsman who refused to let the tradition fade. Today, his grandchildren stand at the same foundry benches, pouring molten iron with the same care their grandfather did nearly ninety years ago.

The Beginning

Nambu lords invite Kyoto craftsmen to Morioka. First iron kettles cast for tea ceremony — quickly becoming treasured household essentials across Japan.

1871

Survival

Feudal era ends. Foundries adapt by selling directly to tea masters who recognize true quality — keeping the craft alive through centuries of change.

NAMBUTEKKI Founded

Master Oikawa Genzaburo establishes his workshop. Preserves the full 68-step traditional method.

Behind Every Kettle

68 Steps, Two Months, One Artisan

No two NAMBUTEKKI kettles are identical. Each follows the same ancient path from raw iron to finished masterpiece.

The Sand Mold

Fine river sand is packed around a wooden model. Then the artisan presses each decorative pattern — dot by dot, line by line — into the sand surface. One mistake means starting over.

Steps 1–22 · Approximately 2 weeks

The Pour

Molten iron glows orange-white at 1500°C (2732°F). The artisan tilts the ladle with decades of muscle memory. Too fast: the mold cracks. Too slow: the iron cools before filling every detail.

The Birth

The sand mold is broken away like a cocoon. The raw casting emerges — then weeks of filing, polishing, and firing at 800°C create the permanent oxide layer that makes Nambu ironware legendary.

Born into a family of ironworkers, Genzaburo-san dedicated his life to preserving the complete 68-step Nambu Tekki method. At a time when mass production threatened to erase traditional craft, he chose the harder path — insisting that every kettle pass through one artisan's hands from start to finish.
